Description

The Calculus Project strives to launch students who are historically absent from high-level mathematics classes (typically Black and Latino students and those from low-income families) on a trajectory toward success in higher-level mathematics. The cornerstone of the Calculus Project are intensive Summer Mathematics Preview courses from Pre-Algebra (grade 7) to Calculus (Grade 12). Academically, these experiences are designed to prepare students for the math courses they will take in the following fall. The experience also addresses social-psychological barriers to success that may exist for Black and Latino students in traditional educational environments. 

 

High School Peer Mentors and High School Administrative Mentees are a vital part of the Calculus Project instructional team. Peer Mentors will assist the Lead and Assistant classroom teachers in carrying out instructional programming and develop skills to teach mathematics using a hands-on approach. Administrative Mentees will support the Program Directors, while also learning about the ins and outs of program management in education. 

 

EXPECTATIONS

In addition to providing instructional support, Peer Mentors will: 

  • Serve as role models for younger students
  • Provide feedback to students on projects and math work 
  • Collaborate daily with lead and assistant teachers to plan math lessons 
  • Lead activities and teach math concepts to small groups of students 
  • Create in-class math activities; help develop activities for summer TCP Math Olympics  

In addition to providing general administrative support, Administrative Mentees will: 

  • Distribute and collect handouts, field trip forms, etc.  
  • Manage Chromebook cart to ensure all computers are returned/charged 
  • Provide administrative support to program Directors as requested  
  • Administer end-of-summer survey to students and analyze results; co-lead staff focus groups 
  • Update Calculus Project student/family handbook 

 

WORK HOURS

Peer Mentors are expected to work during program hours: 

  • 9:00am – 2:00pm, Monday-Friday 
  • Program Duration: Monday July 10th through Friday August 4 

 

COMPENSATION

Peer Mentors will receive the standard hourly wage of $17.09 per hour.

  • 25 hours per week for 4 weeks; 100 total hours
