General Description:   

To provide academic evaluations and psychological evaluations, with and without protectives, as well as provide recommendations for services during special education team meetings that will facilitate learning and promote the cognitive, social, and personal development of all students.

 

Responsibilities include

  • Selects and administers age appropriate assessment methods and material in order to determine the needs of the student, including academic and psychological testing.
  • Consults with teachers and other personnel to obtain information regarding the reason for referral.
  • Conducts observations of students in their current academic environment; this may include going off site to EI, preschools, nursery schools, or play groups.
  • Interprets assessment results and compiles comprehensive assessment reports that address the reason for referral and include appropriate recommendations.
  • Serve as a team member of a student's special education team, and uses assessment data about the student and his/her environment to make valid recommendations to appropriate interventions and placements.
  • Contributes to the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) when the student is found eligible for special education services.
  • Maintains an awareness of new developments and research in the field of assessments and school psychology and provides in-service training and workshops for parents, teachers and staff regarding mental health issues and how disabilities affect student performance and progress.
  • Provides follow-up support and re-evaluation services as necessary.
  • Consults with and supports teachers working with students identified with or suspected of having disabilities.
  • Serves as outreach contact to area preschools and parent groups as needed.
  • Assists with other assignments that Special Education administration may request.
  • Maintains adequate and current testing materials required by academic evaluators and school psychologists.
  • Maintains a log of students tested and team meetings attended.
  • Maintains all testing and evaluation timelines per state and federal regulation.

 

Qualifications:

  • MA Certification as a school psychologist.
  • The position may require travel to out of district placements.
  • Applicants who are fluent in other languages preferred.

 

Terms of Employment

  • Per the Somerville Educators Union, Unit A, collective bargaining agreement

 

Reports to:  Director of Special Education and /or Special Education Department Chair (ECIP)
