Job Goal:  The part-time Evening HVAC teacher is responsible for instructing adult learners in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. 

 

The Somerville Public Schools’ Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (SCALE) is seeking a part-time Teacher to teach an evening HVAC class. The teacher will facilitate a contextualized, competency-based approach to teaching and encourage adult learners to be active participants in their own learning. The teacher will collaborate with other program staff to ensure adult learners are equipped with skills to obtain an entry level position in the field.   

 

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Experience: A minimum of 3 to 5 years of field experience in residential or commercial HVAC systems.
    • Certifications: EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is typically required.
    • Skills: Strong communication skills, patience, and proficiency in MS Office 365.
    • Education: BA degree is required
    • Ability: Effective train students as demonstrated by a minimum of 2 years of experience in lesson planning, lesson delivery, student evaluation and remediation in a HVAC setting.

  

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Deliver in-person, hands-on lab, and theoretical classroom instruction based on approved curricula. Teach technical skills and knowledge to provide students with the competence to become skilled in their field.
  • Prepare and present lesson plans, lectures, and demonstrations on topics such as HVAC/R technology, electrical theory, piping, and heat pumps.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly lab environment; manage tools, equipment, and training materials.
  • Evaluate student progress through exams, hands-on tests, and skill checks, while maintaining accurate attendance and grade records.
  • Guide students toward successful careers, offering support and academic advising.
  • Ensure all instruction aligns with industry standards, safety regulations, and relevant EPA or HVAC Excellence accreditations. 
  • Continuously improves the instruction, curriculum, and equipment in the HVAC area with all trends in the field and is fully and properly preparing students for available and emerging jobs.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the student’s maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process towards the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy regulation.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, director and colleagues.

Terms of Employment:

  • Part time/Grant funded
  • 2/2/2026- 6/30/26
  • 3 evenings per week - Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:00-8:00pm
  • 9 hours of instruction and 2.5 hours of prep
  • Salary Range:  $42.99 to $58.44
