The Somville Robotics League for middle grades students runs from Monday, October 7, 2024 through Saturday, December 14, 2024.
The Somerville Robotics League for Middle Grades provides students who are in grades 5 - 8 with opporuntities to explore beginner and intermediate topics in robotics while having fun. These experiences are designed to prepare students for high school courses and additional Out-of-School Time opportunities.
High School Robotics Youth Mentors are an essential part of the Somerville Robotics League. Youth Mentors co-design and implement programming and activities, assist the adult staff in administartive tasks, and develop skills to facilitate topics in robotics with younger students.
EXPECTATIONS
In addition to providing instructional support, Robotics Youth Mentors will:
- Serve as role models for younger students
- Provide feedback to students on projects and robotics/design work
- Collaborate daily with lead and assistant adult staff to plan activities and lessons
- Lead activities and teach robotics concepts to small and large groups of students
WORK HOURS
Robotics Youth Mentors are expected to work 2-4 hours per week during League hours:
- Mondays and/or Tuesdays 3:00pm - 4:30pm (1.5 hours)
- Planning/Debrief: 0.5 hours per week
- Pre-Season Meeting @ SHS: 1 hour, date TBD
- Pre-Season Meeting @ School Site: 2 hours, September 30/October 1
- Final Event: 7 hours (2 hours prep, 4 hour event, 1 hour clean up)
- Total Hours: 30
- Note: If a Youth Mentor is working at two sites, the student will be compensated for the addiitonal time and receive additional planning time.

COMPENSATION
Robotics Youth Mentors will receive the standard hourly wage of $17.72 per hour.
- 2-4 hours per week for 12 weeks
- Most Yoth Mentors will work 2 hours per week. If a student works at two sites the student can work up to 4 hours per week. During the final week students will work 9 hours which includes the regular meeting time and the final event.
